Autotrader to purchase Kelley Blue Book
Today’s expected announcement of this $500 million-plus deal will combine two giants of Internet car shopping. The deal marries transaction focused Autotrader with research-centric KBB.
In what appears to be a continuation of Autotrader’s strategy of sewing up as much of the Internet-based car shopping process as possible, the Internet listing giant has recently completed the roll up of vAuto and now KBB.
Kelley Blue Book was started in 1926 by then former auto dealer Les Kelley. Kelley started a dealership in 1918 but soon became focused on his vehicle value listing service. The Kelley family has not been part of the company’s ownership since the 1960s and the article in today’s Wall Street Journal indicates that the last Kelley family employee retired in 2000.

Fort Walton Beach Pontiac dealer told he “may have” sold the last Pontiac – but maybe not
Claim appears to originate from a New York Times reporter searching Internet sites for the last available Pontiac – but did he really find it?
The car dubbed “the last Pontiac sold” is a rare Solstice hardtop edition. GM officials could not confirm that this was the last new Pontiac to be retailed. In fact, GM official Tom Henderson claims that there are about 30 new Pontiacs around the country and he expects that most or all will be sold by the November 1st burial date for the Pontiac brand.
The Solstice was sold by what is now known as Lee GMC in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The dealership used to be known as Lee Pontiac GMC and has been selling the Pontiac brand since 1949 – 61 years ago.
In a report found on the Northwest Florida Daily News website, Emerson Lee, the dealership’s sales manager admits that they don’t really know if this is the last Pontiac to be sold or not. But anytime you can get a local newspaper to write a favorable story about your store – who is going to complain?
Pontiac has long been known as the GM brand with a little “attitude”- a little edge that just was not present in a Chevy or Buick. Today it appears that most of that “attitude” has been transferred over to Cadillac. But as of November 1st – Pontiac is no more.

eBay Motors fraudster gets his day in court
eBay Motors is a very popular and successful method for selling cars online so it’s not surprising that some crooks have infiltrated the system. Most people spot the frauds before they suffer any loss, but Rance Carli was different. Mr. Carli stands accused of six counts of defrauding buyers of $245,000. In a Connecticut court he says he is not guilty. His arrest followed an extensive police investigation into complaints from out-of-state and foreign buyers. As reported in the Norwich Register, Mr. Carli allegedly sold vehicles through the online auction website but never delivered them and in some cases the vehicles did not even exist. Police say he used forged or altered documents to push the scheme. In one case in June 2009, a buyer from Wyoming purchased two 2010 Chevrolet Camaros for $90,000. A year went by and the buyer still had not received any of the vehicles, despite repeated promises and excuses. Mr. Carli reportedly told the buyer the cars had not cleared customs in Canada, where they were built. Mr. Carli eventually refunded the buyer $42,000. The buyer, with $48,000 already invested in one car, then agreed to buy a 2008 Dodge Challenger for an additional $30,000, according to the criminal complaint. The cars never arrived, police said, and the buyer is out $78,500. The Camaro Z28 has not been produced for years let alone 2010. In the case of the Challenger, police said they tracked the VIN to a dealer’s lot in Sioux Center, Iowa, where Mr. Carli had apparently shown some interest in the purchase of the car and was given the vehicle’s identification number.
One of the other cases included a buyer from Hong Kong who bought a 2004 Honda Rune for $18,100 in September 2009, but never got the motorcycle. Again police said Mr.Carli had obtained the vehicle identification number of the motorcycle from a dealership in Kentucky.
