Claim appears to originate from a New York Times reporter searching Internet sites for the last available Pontiac – but did he really find it?
The car dubbed “the last Pontiac sold” is a rare Solstice hardtop edition. GM officials could not confirm that this was the last new Pontiac to be retailed. In fact, GM official Tom Henderson claims that there are about 30 new Pontiacs around the country and he expects that most or all will be sold by the November 1st burial date for the Pontiac brand.
The Solstice was sold by what is now known as Lee GMC in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The dealership used to be known as Lee Pontiac GMC and has been selling the Pontiac brand since 1949 – 61 years ago.
In a report found on the Northwest Florida Daily News website, Emerson Lee, the dealership’s sales manager admits that they don’t really know if this is the last Pontiac to be sold or not. But anytime you can get a local newspaper to write a favorable story about your store – who is going to complain?
Pontiac has long been known as the GM brand with a little “attitude”- a little edge that just was not present in a Chevy or Buick. Today it appears that most of that “attitude” has been transferred over to Cadillac. But as of November 1st – Pontiac is no more.
